Our Story
Hi, I'm Mitushi — the artist, maker, and heart behind Dastkaari.
Dastkaari (pronounced dust-kaa-ri) is an Urdu word that means "handcrafted." It's the perfect name for what we do — because every single piece we create is made entirely by hand, with love, intention, and a deep respect for the cultural traditions that inspire us.
## Where It All Began
Dastkaari was not born as a business — it began as a quiet act of healing.
After the birth of our second daughter, what should have been a joyful chapter became one of the most difficult periods of our lives. Postpartum depression brought a heaviness that words often fail to describe. In that stillness, we found ourselves searching — for comfort, for meaning, and for a way back to light.
We turned to something deeply familiar: our roots.
Between India and Pakistan lives a shared cultural language — of color, craft, storytelling, and resilience. We began revisiting the art we grew up around: the hand-painted trucks, the intricate Mughal patterns, the vibrant bazaars, the quiet beauty of objects made by hand. What started as small moments of painting together became something much more meaningful.
It became a way to reconnect — with ourselves, with each other, and with our daughters.
## What Dastkaari Means
Dastkaari became our way of passing down heritage — not through textbooks, but through touch, color, and everyday objects. Each kettle, each cup, each piece we create carries a story — of where we come from and what we want our daughters to remember.
At Dastkaari we hand-paint functional everyday objects — tea kettles, Turkish coffee pots, dallah pots, copper vessels, mango wood pieces, and more — using traditional Indo-Pakistani motifs and Mughal-inspired designs.
Every piece starts as a plain metal or wood object. I paint each one by hand, brushstroke by brushstroke, using vibrant colors and intricate patterns inspired by:
- Pakistani truck art — the explosively colorful folk art tradition found on trucks across Pakistan
- Mughal miniature painting — the delicate, detailed art form that flourished in the Mughal Empire
- Traditional Middle Eastern and South Asian craft traditions
No two pieces are exactly alike. Every imperfection is intentional — it's the mark of a human hand, not a machine.
## From Our Home to Yours
Today, Dastkaari is our bridge between past and present. What began in a deeply personal space has grown into something we are honored to share with our community here in the DMV and beyond. Through our work, we invite others into that same world — one where culture is not just preserved, but lived, celebrated, and held close.
When you order from Dastkaari you are not buying from a warehouse or a factory — you are buying directly from the artist. Every piece that leaves our studio carries with it the story of where it came from and the love that went into making it.
We also love creating custom and personalized pieces — whether it's a specific color palette, a name, a special design, or a meaningful motif. If you have something special in mind, we would love to bring it to life for you.
Thank you for being here. Thank you for supporting handmade art. And thank you for letting Dastkaari be a part of your home.
With love and color,
Mitushi
